samenvatting: This report expands on the current body of literature by examining potential pathways that funnel youth out of school and potentially into the criminal justice system in a national sample of LGBTQ middle and high school students. This report draws predominately from data from GLSEN's 2013 National School Climate Survey, 33 sharing both relevant, previously reported findings and presenting new findings from analysis conducted specifically for this report. We explore potential mechanisms by which LGBTQ youth are pushed out of school - from direct victimization to individual and institutional discrimination. We also examine LGBTQ students' specific experiences with school discipline and criminal and juvenile justice systems. Furthermore, as existing data has revealed that some students - specifically Black and Latino youth, youth with disabilities, and gender nonconforming youth - may be unfairly disciplined at school and overrepresented in the juvenile justice system, we assess potential differences in LGBTQ students' experiences by demographic factors, such as race/ethnicity, gender, housing status, and disability. Lastly, we present recommendations for both further research and specific programmatic and policy strategies that may help to keep LGBTQ youth in school and reduce their risk of involvement with the criminal and juvenile justice systems.

samenvatting: Over the last 15 years, lawmakers and school administrators have increasingly recognized that LGBT youth are a vulnerable population in school settings, and many have implemented policies designed to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. Yet progress is uneven. In many states and school districts, LGBT students and teachers lack protections from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. In others, protections that do exist are inadequate or unenforced. As transgender and gender non-conforming students have become more visible, too, many states and school districts have ignored their needs and failed to ensure they enjoy the same academic and extracurricular benefits as their non-transgender peers. This undermines a number of fundamental human rights, including LGBT students? rights to education, personal security, freedom from discrimination, access to information, free expression, association and privacy. Based on interviews with over 500 students, teachers, administrators, parents, service providers, and advocates in Alabama, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Utah, this report focuses on four main issues that LGBT people continue to experience in school environments in the United States. Areas of concern include bullying and harassment, exclusion from school curricula and resources, restrictions on LGBT student groups, and other forms of discrimination and bigotry against students and staff based on sexual orientation and gender identity. While not exhaustive, these broad issues offer a starting point for policymakers and administrators to ensure that LGBT people?s rights are respected and protected in schools.

samenvatting: This report highlighted the lack of awareness about SOGIE-related school violence in Viet Nam schools, and the high risks of violence and negative academic and wellbeing outcomes for LGBT students. It uncovered the conservative beliefs about gender and sexual orientation held by many school stakeholders, and the need for holistic action which combats prejudices and violence while protecting the privacy and diverse expressions of LGBT individual students. Updates to Vietnamese education policies, curricula and practices would greatly enable such change, and the report provided various recommendations towards ensuring that schools in Viet Nam become safer and more supportive spaces for LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT.

Same-Sex Sexuality and Educational Attainment : The Pathway to College  / Jennifer Pearson & Lindsey Wilkinson.

samenvatting: Research finds lower levels of academic performance among sexual minority high school students, but some studies suggest sexual minorities have higher levels of educational attainment in adulthood. To further our understanding of how and why sexual orientation is associated with educational success, this study turns attention to the pathways to college completion, examining points along educational trajectories in which sexual minorities fall behind or surpass their heterosexual peers. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we find that sexual minority women are less likely than women with no same-sex sexuality to complete college, in part due to their high school performance and transition into college. Men who experience same-sex sexuality only in adolescence struggle in high school, but men who experience same-sex sexuality for the first time in adulthood are more likely to earn a college degree than men who do not experience same-sex sexuality. samenvatting: Emerging evidence suggests that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth experience disparate treatment in schools that may result in criminal sanctions. In an effort to understand the pathways that push youth out of schools, we conducted focus groups with youth (n = 31) from Arizona, California, and Georgia, and we interviewed adult advocates from across the United States (n = 19). Independent coders used MAXQDA to organize and code data. We found that LGBTQ youth are punished for public displays of affection and violating gender norms. Youth often experience a hostile school climate, may fight to protect themselves, and are frequently blamed for their own victimization. Family rejection and homelessness facilitate entry in the school-to-prison pipeline. Narratives highlight new opportunities to challenge inequity in schools.

samenvatting: Victimization based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender expression (SOGE) carries significant consequences. In this study, we examined how SOGE-based victimization and contextual factors predicted truancy among 886 Chilean students (Mage = 16.00, SD = 1.30) in four high schools. Victimization predicted truancy indirectly through its associations with students feeling unsafe at school - in general and specifically related to their SOGE. Furthermore, perceptions of a negative SOGE-based school climate predicted greater truancy, almost entirely indirectly through students feeling more unsafe at school in general and specifically related to their SOGE.

samenvatting: Low educational attainment, often a lack of a high school diploma or matriculation degree, has been linked to negative health outcomes and lower quality of life for sexual and gender minorities globally. However, optimism and resiliency have been demonstrated to provide buffering effects on school dropout. We conducted a study in a South African rural setting to understand the school experiences of gay men, drag queens, and transgender women in Mpumalanga, South Africa. We recruited 35 HIV-positive participants using a purposive sampling method and then conducted a series of focus group discussions. A semi-structured focus group protocol was used, which covered three main domains: educational attainment and goals, experiences as a gender or sexual minority in school before matriculation, and personal and social values placed on education. Through a constant comparison analytical approach, we identified four themes to include school violence and discrimination, dropping out or staying silent to cope, competition between drag queens and girls, and education is social power. Our study suggests that sexual and gender minority youth navigate harassment and discrimination, which negatively impacts their educational attainment, but there is opportunity to support their academic achievement and leadership in society by building upon their acts of resiliency.
